Within the pages of this book are details of nearly 18,000 losses of ships, boats and aircraft. The area covered starts at Shetland works its way through the Orkneys and down the east coast of Scotland to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The west coast chapter includes the Inner and Outer Hebrides with the mainland west coast, moving round the Mull of Kintyre and Mull of Galloway into the Solway Firth to finish at Gretna.
Another chapter deals with those ships, and aircraft, that left or were making for a Scottish port but disappeared.

Losses due to natural and man-make causes are included and the size of vessels ranges from the small fishing boat to two aircraft carriers.

The name index includes all previous names whilst the index by date of loss provides interesting possibilities for statistical analysis.
